Hidden Moorgate walk

The long awaited “Hidden Moorgate” walk took place in July, together with Friends of Boston Parklands. Over 20 people enjoyed seeing previously unseen parts of the area as well as a few snippets on more familiar places.

We were lucky enough to be shown around Woodhurst which is in the grounds of Thomas Rotherham College, and into the gardens of John Guest’s Moorgate Grange which gave us a view not usually seen from the road. With a few details about The Belvedere, Fairfield House and Woodfield Villas the group moved on to Moorgate Cemetery to learn details on several important peoples’ graves.

A leaflet with full details of the houses and people concerned was well received and we shall plan another walk in the Spring. .

Past Events

 On April 30th, 25 people joined the  Friends group for a walk from Rotherham town centre to 
Masbrough. Margaret Sides guided the walkers and pointed out many places of interest which 
stirred both memories and discussion. The general feeling was of surprise that so much history 
existed in such a small area. A brochure contained more detail. The  walkers enjoyed refreshments 
at the community centre afterwards. We are  planning another walk covering Masbrough itself, 
Holmes and Ferham in the near future.

Rotherham Markets Department arranged a  charity market which took place on 15th of 
October 2005 at the Outside Market,  the event was very successful and as well as helping us 
raise funds by selling donated goods, it also gave us the chance to tell more people about our 
groups  work.
